I don't want to be mean, but a JW friend was trying to convert me at work by giving me all types of material. She gave me a videotape of the JW organization (about 15 years old) that showed the workers at the headquarters in Brooklyn. This other non-member friend and I were watching it (without the JW) and it came to a scene where the workers were having lunch at the headquarters and listening to a lunch hour speaker...they were either all so serious, no one moved, some looked sleepy, we though we were looking at Stepfordville -- it was hysterical...we couldn't stop laughing -- and this was the promotional film for the organization! Even if I believed the doctrine, I wouldn't join because it looked so depressing and who needs that.

Most unintentionally funny scene in a movie
by Abaddon inin the original superman, where superman sticks the flag back on top the white house, and says "i stand for truth, justice, and the american way"; this never failed (the couple of times i saw it in the cinema as a kid) to reduce the audiences to tears of laughter (in enlgand).. in the blair witch project, where she's doing the "i'm sorry" bit in the super-big-close-up nostril shot; hilarious.. the bit in jurassic park where the lawyer gets eaten; the audience i was with cheered.... .

Just throwing my 2 cents in. With the way the world is it kind of 'dares' you to be positive, very challenging. I think older people have several things going on and it's even more challenging for them. In every way, physically and mentally they're not what they use to be (are any of us) and it's not going to get better, only speedingly worse...like my mom says, "getting old sucks" (she thinks young). And that puts stress on you spiritually...it's hard to be up and positive when you just don't feel right. I think a lot of them can't help it and it's just their way of venting...kind of a constant "ouch". With my older relatives I just take the "whatever" attitude with them...but the times that I do question them, I do it very neutrally or modify what's going on, just to put a mirror up to them...that sometimes gets them to look and themselves or what they've said and start backpedaling. I'll say things like "now why did you say that? I didn't see it that way" or "I think they were just trying to say...." or "why is that making you angry...it's no big deal". Also, think of it, as you get to the "twi-light" of your life, most of the world you knew when you were vibrant is gone...think of your world now...your family, friends, they way you understand life that makes sense, your capacity to do...they're almost all gone - there goes most of your emotional support. So the emotion that comes out to survive and combat the loss and bad feelings is a recipricol feeling of being negative. (Gads...I sound like a pyschologist! Sorry) Anyway, I'm glad your a positive person, and whether you realize it or not your Grandma loves being around your...it's like a polarized attraction (negative / positive). She probably feeds off of your positive energy....just don't feed off of hers (and I know that can be difficult). For me, the greatest word in the English language for handling such things is the neutral "WHATEVER"....and go on... don't give it any power over you.

I'd vote for you in a nano-second, however I think Dictators need to "take over" a government, they're not elected. Let me know if you're forming an army.

Move the Al Quaida prisoners!
by Norm inmany are concerned with the conditions of the prisoner held in cuba.
it appears that their conditions are far better then what happens to refugees in australia.. it is quite shocking to read what goes on in australia regarding their treatment of refugees.isnt it wonderful how these lovely and caring australian nation are so happy to keep women and children in concentration camps out in the desert for years?
how great it is to know that we have australia among the international federation of civilized nations, where human rights and particularly childrens right are of major concern, particularly if these children are non australian.. norm

Adonai, I don't have the time right now, but there are several things you just brought up that needs to be 'challenged' stictly from a fairness issue...because what you use as arguements seem to be the same old hashed over (and inadvertantly misleading) arguements that have been made against the mormans since time memorial. It kind of reminds me of the first couple of decades of Christianity. The Jews who believed the Messiah had come were denounced by other Jews as not really being Jewish, and the new Christians always having to defend themselves as real Jews and part of the chosen people. I still believe that 1 JOHN 4:15 means what it says.."Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God"... whether they be Catholic, Luthern, Baptist, non-denominational, Morman, whatever... and it's left up to God to judge how his children believe in Him. As my mother (raised in several Christian denominations) use to say "I think everyone is going to be shocked when they get to Heaven to see who's there and who's not, and they're not all going to be from the same church".

First of all, I don't think you can equate the Mormans with JW's (although people try all the time). I know several Mormans and a couple of JW's and I must say, they kind of reflect their websites that you posted. I always thought my JW acquaintences were 'playing' me...a kind of hidden agenda going on, and this board brings into focus those feelings. On the other hand, my Morman friends, like their website are very open, can discuss anything, and if you agree or disagree it's ok...the world's not going to fall apart and no one's going to hell.
I've had many scriptural conversations with Mormans, and all from my part asking questions...it was never them pushing their religion or the in-your-face approach. Adonai, most of your postings elsewhere I've agreed with you and your common sense, however this time I must disagree based on my own experience. The Mormans believe in the Bible and use The King James Version...to say they switch the meaning of the scriptures is ludicrous...that's like the Catholics saying the Protestants switched the meaning, or the Baptist switch the meaning on baptisms by immersion rather that sprinkling like the Catholics....nobody switched anything. It's their interpretation of the Bible. Christianity's take on scriptures at 400 A.D. was different than the first century Christian Church's beliefs ...this is nothing new (but that's another discussion). And what's this about LDS trying to 'assimilate' with the Christian Church....they are what they are. The bible says in 1 JOHN 4:15 "Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God." Mormans definately believe that Jesus is the Christ, the only begotten Son of God, and it is through His sacrifice and grace that eternal life is found. Now that is the basis of Christianity...everything else, the differences in interpretations is sweating the small stuff.

YOU KNOW - It's interesting to note that your statements can be claimed by several religions as 'proof' of their religion's 'truth' ... they too will say they have apostates who fight against the 'truth'. They too have adherants that adamently believe and fight for 'The Truth', because of their understanding of the scriptures. The difference is your knowledge of other Christian religions is so limited by restrictions placed on you by WTS for examining what others believe, that you will always have a biased, narrow view provided by limited information. You can never honestly say what you believe is true unless you have throughly examined everything you can...but that will never happen, will it. What if some other religion knocked on your door, before the JW's...convinced you of the 'truth'. You would be using the very same scriptures to prove you are right and others, include WTS are false.

read the article....MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. This reads like someone is TRYING to make something out of this. I watched that townhall mtg.. and understood what he was saying. Of course he didn't see the first plane (not enough time to get it on the air), but you can bet he heard about it through his staff. The townhall mtg. was a month later, and his remarks were off the cuff...and I'm sure like all of us he saw those replayed images over and over...when he spoke, he of course didn't have time to see it, but just used that inadvertantly in his remarks. When the second plane hit, and he was advised while sitting in the school room, you can't mistaken the total shock in his face....his mind racing when he was told "the U.S. is under attack". I applaude him, as well as commentators who said he calmly cut the mtg. short as not to frighten the children. The commentators were also saying his aides were standing at the back of the room making all kinds of gestures to get him out, but again, he handled it brillantly for the kids sake. Why must everything be a conspiracy?
